Ikka is here with a new track “Titli” and fans are unable to contain their feeling to see the rapper talk out about the ongoing situation in India regarding women’s safety,
After the R.G. Kar Medical College rape case sent waves of shock around the nation and raised questions about the safety of women. Ikka has released a short track on the situation. He released the track on 15 August and has received praise for using his art as a way of expressing his support. The song “Titli” talks about a girl (referred to as a butterfly) whose dreams and hopes have been shattered due to an unfortunate event (rape). The track is a tribute to the doctor who, after working hard for years, had finally started living her dreams, only for them to be snatched away by some men who snatch them away.
The release of this track is a perfect example of how significant art is in society. The Desi hip-hop community has expressed their support for the ongoing protests and rappers like Raga have even come forward with statements like: “Talking about my own songs which glorified/objectified women in a bad way. Aaj ke baad I condemn this kinda art poore sire se aur dil se!” This is great news because the Desi hip-hop community has often come under fire for objectification and over-sexualisation of women. The use of obscene language (relating to mothers and sisters) by rappers has been criticised by many.
And while a few rappers have said that they did not want to be role models to anyone, it is important to acknowledge the influence they have on a whole generation who listens to them. It DHH community is not perfect, but we hope that over time audience as well as the artists realise the significance of their art and how influential it can be.
