Center Suspends Inquiry into Moosewala’s Parents’ IVF-Assisted Childbirth

As previously relayed, the parents of late Punjabi sensation, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, famously known as Sidhu Moosewala, welcomed a baby boy on 17th March 2024. What makes this event extraordinary is the fact that the child was born through the in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique to Sidhu Moosewala’s mother Charan Kaur who defied convention at the age of 58. However, what set this event apart was not just its novelty but the subsequent ripple effect it caused across legal and ethical landscapes. With India’s established age bracket for IVF treatments standing between 21 to 50 years for women and 26 to 55 years for men, the arrival of Moosewala’s sibling prompted questions and debates. It even raised eyebrows amongst pundits and policymakers alike.

The Ministry of Health swiftly responded to the unfolding saga, initiating inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the IVF-assisted childbirth. The Punjab Government and Opposition parties added their voices to the chorus, urging the Central Government to delve deeper into the matter. Yet, amidst mounting pressure, the expected trajectory took an unexpected detour.

In a surprising twist, the Central Government chose to suspend its investigation, citing the geographic origin of the IVF treatment as grounds for cessation. With the procedures conducted in the UK, the government deemed further scrutiny unnecessary,

Charan Kaur gave birth to the child solely in India, while all the procedures related to in vitro fertilization (IVF) were conducted in London, England. Balakaur Singh, Sidhu Moosewala’s father, stated that the Health Department only questioned them once, and thereafter, no further queries were raised.

The child was born at a hospital in Bathinda on the 17th of March. Balakaur Singh and Charan Kaur traveled to the UK in November 2022 for the procedure since there are no restrictions on the age of women undergoing IVF treatment in the UK. This led to the Indian Government halting the investigation above.

The birth of Sidhu Moosewala’s baby brother through advanced medical techniques has sparked discussions regarding the legality and regulation of such procedures in India. While the Central Government has temporarily halted the investigation, this incident prompts a larger conversation about the evolving landscape of reproductive technologies and their implications in Indian society.
